Why Chose a Career in Medical Devices

The coronavirus Pandemic has hit the entire world hard, and it has been no different for the medical devices industry (currently there are an estimated 2.3 million people awaiting surgical care). However, it’s not all been bad, the advancements in data collection and remote monitoring have enabled medical companies to respond to the huge and critical demand for medical equipment, particularly PPE and ventilators. This will put the industry in one of the best positions for when the pandemic reaches its conclusion. This has further boosted the appeal for people looking for a long and rewarding career in medical devices.

Rewind to 2019 and pre-pandemic, we were seeing an incredible rise in the demand for medical device products after three straight years of record investment in the UK. You would almost always require more of a scientific background/degree to go into one of those roles, which might make it more of an obstacle for some people. Degrees such as Life Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and Pharmacy can all lead you in very good stead if you are looking to pursue a career In Medical Devices.

Many medical device companies are experiencing significant year on year growth as they continue to innovate, develop, and commercialise new products. These companies are always looking for medical device sales reps to maintain their edge against the competition. If you have a confident, friendly personality, are good at building relationships and have a passion for improving the lives of patients, then medical device sales could be the perfect career choice for you.

You can also transition into this career from other related sales positions, providing you have a good work ethic and are willing to learn about the products you are selling. Medical device sales jobs almost always offer potential career progression opportunities; medical reps often transition into leadership and management roles given time and a level of success. And if you’re not already convinced, it is estimated that the Medical Devices market will be worth over £600 billion by 2028, which shows that you would be joining a rapidly growing industry, one that is showing no signs of slowing down.

In terms of salary expectations, medical device sales jobs tend to offer a basic salary of around £30k per year and increases with experience; you almost always also have the possibility of earning plenty more in commission and performance related bonuses.

Overall, it can be a very rewarding job with plenty of opportunities out there for people looking to either start or progress their career in medical devices.
